MAN (metropolitan area network)

MAN (metropolitan area networks) are networks that scale larger than a LAN (Local Area Network) and usually a combination of several LAN that are connected in a city. in this case the network connecting small networks to form a larger network. as examples of existing networks among school sector in the city that connects all the schools that exist abroad.
between MAN and LAN is actually the same concept, but only the scope of Its area is different. LAN only covers a small area such as in an office or school. MAN while more area with coverage area of a city.

Computer Networks And Local Area Network


computer network is a connection between one computer to another computer by using the supporting device. computer network shared some computer network based on the distance of the network coverage. among which:
  1. 1. LAN(Local Area Network)
  2. 2. MAN(Metropoitan Area Network)
  3. 3. WAN(Wide Area Network)
computer networks have the advantage of them:
  1. 1. for sharing resources
  2. 2. help maintain the information in order to remain reliable and up to date
  3. 3. faster process of sharing data.
  4. 4. sharing hardware.
  5. 5. and much more.

LAN (Local Area Network) is a computer network design that has a small scale. normally used for a room and consists of several computers. to create a network of computers with a Type LAN, we need some support device. such a switch or hub that serves as a concentrator / terminal gathering data packets from one computer to be distributed to the destination computer, cables, connectors.
to design computer networks by type of LAN, we must choose a topology concepts to help us in building a computer network. for topics this time I will build a computer network with STAR topology. because the star topology is very easy to build and if there is a network troubleshooting, it would be easy to repair.
installation preparation
  1. 1. prepare computer use within NIC
  2. 2. provide a place to network.
  3. 3. Design a network using STAR topology
  4. 4. determine the cable path so as not to obstruct the way.
  5. 5. provide cable UTP / STP.
  6. 6. RJ-45 connectors to taste.
  7. 7. prepare Crimping Tool to crimp the cable to the connector.
  8. 8. Cable Tester, for checking the quality of the cable that was made.
  9. 9. DAK cable
  10. 10. Switch or HUB

installation phase
1. layout location of all computer and switch / HUB. for all the computers get the same connection, because if the computer is too far, will affect the process of data transmission.
2. measuring cable from the switch / hub to each computer.
3. make a cable with straight-over type. Crimping tool for ease of use.
4. check the cable using a cable tester.
5. Connect from any computer to the switch / hub (as the concentrator)
6. computer settings through the operating system used.

Some LAN configuration model, a computer is usually used as a File Server. which is used to store software that manage network activity. or as software that can be used by the computers that connect to the network. computers connected to the network is usually referred to as a workstation. Usually the ability under the File servers and workstations have other applications on the hard drive in addition to applications for the network. Most LANs use the media cable for connecting one computer to another.

Types of cables in STAR Topology

Almost all computer networks are now using LAN topology with STAR topology type. because the star topology has the ease of maintenance and repair networks in the event of problems on the network.
The star topology there are two types of cable that can be used. cable is basically used both use UTP or STP cable. but the division here is based on the number eight wire arrangement found on cable UTP / STP.
eight cables have eight different colors, there are:
  1. 1. white-orange
  2. 2. orange
  3. 3. white-green
  4. 4. green
  5. 5. white-blue
  6. 6. blue
  7. 7. White-brown
  8. 8. Brown
two types of cable that I mentioned above is the Cross-overs and Straight-over. to the concept of wiring as well there are two types, namely T568A and T568B.

T568A arrangement
  1. 1. white-orange
  2. 2. orange
  3. 3. white-green
  4. 4. blue
  5. 5. white-blue
  6. 6. green
  7. 7. White-brown
  8. 8. Brown

T568B arrangement:
  1. 1. white-green
  2. 2. green
  3. 3. white-orange
  4. 4. blue
  5. 5. white-blue
  6. 6. orange
  7. 7. White-brown
  8. 8. Brown


To make STRAIGHT-OVER cable, I recommend to use the T568A arrangement at both ends of the cable. CROSS-OVER while for cable, I recommend to use the Type T568A on one end of the cable. and one end of the cord longer use T568B arrangement.
although there are different opinions with me, but I used to use way of wiring above to build a network.
differences in the use of straight-over cable and CROSS-OVER cable is as below:

insert both ends of the cable to the cable tester

Mesh Topology

This is the last network topology that I will discuss. after discussing the bus topology, Ring topology, Star topology, Hybrid star topology, and the last is the Mesh topology.
Among other topologies, mesh topology have excessive relationship between the existing equipment. So its structure, each existing equipment in the network are connected to each other. Can be imagined, if amount of equipment that is connected very much, certainly it would be very difficult to controlled than only a few devices that connected.
Installation of Mesh Topology

Most networks that use a mesh topology would have difficulty in installation if the equipment that is connected number had grown a lot, because the amount of relationships that connected more and more amount. So if any n equipment (computers) that we will connect, then the calculation is n (n-1) / 2. So if there are 5 computers, then the relationship will be created as many as 5 (5-1) / 2 or 10 ties. So if a computer that is connected increasingly more so the more the relationship will be regulated. This topology is suitable to be used on small systems.

The benefits of using mesh topology there are:
  • • The main advantage of using a mesh topology is fault tolerance.
  • • Guarantee the communication channel capacity, because it has a relationship of excess.
  • • Relatively easy to do troubleshoot.

Disadvantages of Using Mesh Topology
Mesh topology has deficiencies as follows:
  • • The difficulty at the time of installation and reconfiguration when amount of computers and devices that connect increasingly increase amount.
  • • huge costs to maintain the relationship of excess.

Hybrid Star Network



we can use some type of cable to implement star network. Hybrid hub can be used to accommodate some types of cable in a star network.

The benefits of using Star Topology
We can take benefits in using this hybrid topology are:
  • • It is easy to modify and add computers to in network using star topology without disrupting network activity was progress. We just simply add New cable from our computer to a central location (central location) and attach the cable to a hub. When the capacity of the hub
  • center already exceeds capacity, then we just replace the hub with a hub that has more number of ports.
  • • Center of star network is a good place to diagnose errors that occur in the network. Intelligent hub is a hub which is equipped with microprocessors that in addition to having features in addition to repeating the network signal is also a centralized monitoring and management of the network.
  • • If one computer in network is damaged then the computer will not turn off the entire star network . Hub can detect errors in network and separate the damaged computer from the network and allow network to reoperate.
  • • We can use several types of cables in the same network hub that can accommodate different types of cable.

Lack of using Star Topology
Star topology has the following shortcomings:
  • Have one point of error, lies in the hub. If the central hub fails, the entire network will fail to operate.
  • Requires a tool in the central point for rebroadcasting or change of network traffic
  • Need more cable for all network cables to be pulled into one central point, so more needs more cable than other network topologies.
